ALGER — A woman watching two people take down a tree was killed Sunday near Alger by the falling tree.

The Skagit County sheriff’s office says the property owner hired an acquaintance with a friend who are experienced in cutting down trees.

They had tied a line to the tree and were using a pulley to move the top in one direction when the tree spun around and fell in another direction.

The sheriff’s office says the woman couldn’t move out of the way before it landed on her.

She was identified Monday by Skagit County Deputy Coroner Matthew Sias as 61-year-old Claudia Lauden of Alger. She died of her injuries.
