Letter: Downsizing military cuts state jobs

Published: March 2, 2014, 4:00pm

Yes, we can cut the military but look at all the jobs that will be lost and the effect on unemployment. Some of these people are in the military business because they could not find a job to support their families. And I have not even started on the defense industry.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt and World War II opened the job market by increasing our war effort and we solved the unemployment issue then. I do not advocate starting or continuing a war in order to keep these folks busy, so how about cutting some of the overhead, middle management, like business does?

Many folks have taken advantage of the military market; look at all the retired military folks and most of them are working a second job obtained through their military experience. Look who are at the top of the largest employers in the state of Washington — Boeing and Joint Base Lewis-McChord — and in many states this would be true as far as base employers go.

We might balance the budget in closing these bases but what would happen to the unemployment lines?
