Pacific University senior Caleb Malychewski will end his collegiate career at the NCAA Division III national championships.
The Camas High School graduate advanced to nationals for the second consecutive season by placing third at 184 pounds at the NCAA-III West Regional Championships held at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
After losing 7-5 in overtime to Augsburg’s Tom Teigen in the semifinals, Malychewski rebounded to take a 4-1 decision from Austin Bellile of the Milwaukee School of Engineering before capturing the consolation final over Joshua Willaert of St. John’s (Minn.), 4-1.
Malychewski (29-6) led five Boxers placers and helped Pacific to seventh place in the team standings.
The Boxers totaled 53 points, 111/2 more than at the 2013 regionals, and improved their finish by a place over last season.
Malychewski has two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Division III Championships on March 14-15 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Malychewski is looking to finish his Pacific career with a bang after becoming Pacific’s first participant at the NCAA Division III National Championships in seven years.
He was 30-10 last season, placing second at 184 at regionals and finishing as the school’s first 30-match winner since 2008. He was ranked No. 8 in both the D3Wrestle.com and National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.

Edmonson leads Portland CC to title
Evergreen grad Warren Edmondson was selected to all-tournament first team after leading Portland Community College to the NWAACC men’s basketball championship.
Edmondson had 18 points, five rebounds and three assists as the Panthers defeated Pierce 92-86 late Tuesday in Kennewick.
Edmondson scored 42 points in Portland’s 96-82 semifinal win over Skagit Valley.

Bartek helps Hornets set 36-hole record
Sacramento State freshman Chloe Bartek helped the Hornets to a second-place tie at the Red Rocks Invitational tournament in Sedona, Ariz.
Washington’s Class 3A state champion a year ago, the Columbia River High School graduate shot rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154 total — four strokes lower than her previous 36-hole event collegiate best — and a tie for 25th place.
The Hornets’ team total of 602 broke the school record for a two-round event by a stroke. Sacramento State and Northern Arizona tied for second, 14 strokes behind Xavier.

McCartney wins two events against Aggies
Sacramento State junior Kalliah McCartney of Vancouver claimed her first win of the season on balance beam and her fifth victory of 2014 on vault, scoring 9.875 on both events Friday as the Hornets lost a dual meet at Utah State.
McCartney, a graduate of CAM High School in Battle Ground, also scored 9.700 on bars and did not compete in floor exercise.
Mejia claims first collegiate event win
Boise State University freshman Diana Mejia won the balance beam in the Broncos’ home victory Friday over Iowa, the first event win of her collegiate career.
The Skyview High School graduate scored 9.875 in the event, her best mark of the season. She also scored 9.850 on bars against the Hawkeyes.
Boise State is ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division I.
Women’s track and field
SPU’s Decker 10th in NCAA-II in 800 meters
Seattle Pacific University sophomore Lynelle Decker moved into the Top 10 in NCAA Division II in the indoor 800-meter run, clocking a personal best in the SPU Final Qualifier meet Saturday at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor facility.
The Mountain View High School graduate’s time of 2 minutes, 11.97 seconds converts to 2:13.49 on a 200-meter flat. Decker was a national qualifier last year with the 18th best time.
NCAA-II nationals are March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Cavs’ Washington NAIA indoor qualifier
Concordia University senior Andre Washington is seeded fourth in the 600 meters for the NAIA indoor track and field championships set for Thursday through Saturday in Geneva, Ohio.
The Hudson’s Bay High School graduate’s seed time is 1 minute, 19.82 seconds. He is one of 23 Cavaliers — 18 men and five women — who will be competing.
Academic awards
Swanson, Gelhar honored by GNAC
Northwest Nazarene sophomore forward Katie Swanson and Saint Martin’s junior guard Angela Gelhar were named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball All-Academic team.
• Swanson, a Skyview High School graduate, is a graphic design major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.74. She averages 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds a game for the Crusaders, who finished the season 15-11, playing in all 26 games.
• Gelhar, a Prairie High School graduate, is an education major with a GPA of 3.20. She averages 10.6 points a game and is an 83.7 percent (118 of 141) free throw shooter for the Saints (17-10), with 24 starts in 27 games going into this week’s GNAC tournament.
To be eligible for the GNAC all-academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be in at least his or her second year of competition at a GNAC university.

WWU’s Bragg named First Team All-GNAC
Western Washington University senior center Austin Bragg was named First Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference for men’s basketball.
A graduate of Mark Morris High School in Longview, Bragg played at Clark College before transferring to WWU. The Vikings (19-7) are the No. 2 seed in this week’s GNAC tournament.
The 6-foot-9 Bragg leads the conference with 9.0 rebounds a game and is second in the GNAC in both blocks (1.8) and offensive rebounds (3.2). He is fourth in scoring (17.5 points) and field goal percentage (60.2, 165 of 274). He was twice named GNAC Player of the Week and recorded only the third triple-double in conference history this season in a win over Alaska-Anchorage.
Baseball
NWC honors Dixon
George Fox University senior first baseman Derek Dixon was named Northwest Conference baseball position player of the week for his performance in a doubleheader Saturday at Lewis & Clark, 8-0 and 6-1 victories for the Bruins.
The Columbia River High School graduate went 5 for 5 in the opener and was a home run short of the cycle, driving in four runs. He was 2 for 4 in the nightcap with a double and a home run.
