Evergreen High School is among 42 schools in the state to receive the first English Language Acquisition Award from the Washington State Board of Education. It’s the only award recipient in Southwest Washington.
The board created the award to recognize schools whose students are making the greatest progress toward becoming proficient in English, which is a stepping stone to career and college readiness.
Currently, 63 languages are spoken by students enrolled in Evergreen Public Schools. Of the total student population, 12 percent are enrolled in English Language Learner classes.
According to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction’s K-12 Report Card, the number of the state’s ELL students increased 30 percent between May 2005 and May 2013. In the 2012-13 school year, 187 different languages were spoken by Washington students.
