The American Heart Association kicked off the annual Heart & Stroke Walk this month.

The 2014 Greater Portland Heart & Stroke Walk will take place May 17. The event supports the Oregon/Southwest Washington division of the American Heart Association.

The walk will have events in both Vancouver and Portland. The local event will take place at Vancouver Landing; the Portland walk will be at Eastbank Esplanade.

This is the 11th year of the event, which raised $615,000 last year. This year’s goal is to raise $660,000 for heart-related programs and research.

The volunteer chairman of the event, Andrew McCulloch, who is president of Northwest Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, kicked off the fundraising effort by challenging Kaiser employees to raise $100,000 to help fund heart disease and stroke research.

Individuals and companies interested in sponsoring or attending can call 503-820-5300 or visit www.pdxheartwalk.org.
