Letter: Establish fire wall codes

The Columbian
Published: March 25, 2014, 5:00pm

There have been too many apartment fires recently that have impacted multiple residents. As a result, they no longer have a place to live, may become injured, not to mention the loss of most of their belongings. It raises the serious question about the permit requirements for builders to make these multi-resident buildings fire safe.

Sprinkler systems alone won’t stop a fire from spreading to adjacent apartments when the attics and adjoining walls are not built to prevent fires from easily spreading.

One-hour fire walls should be the minimum barrier between every one of the unit walls, floors, ceilings and attics. The county building permit department must take responsibility and make these builders make safer housing by keeping any fire contained at it’s source.

Clark County commissioners, are you paying attention?
