Letter: Cultivate interest in school gardens

School lunches are outrageously unhealthy for students to be consuming every day of the school year.

I know that cost limitations involved in feeding millions of children every day and the immensity of the administrative bureaucracy blurs the lines of how food priorities are set. This makes school lunches a touchy subject. But, there are ways that we can avoid these unhealthy choices and give all our kids a healthy and happy 13 years of school.

We could have an Associated Student Body group or anyone else interested help to start a school garden so we can have fresh fruits and vegetables. This would help to cut back on expenses to put toward the cost of other healthy ingredients needed to make healthy, delicious lunches.

Studies show that students who eat school-prepared lunches compared to those who bring food from home are more likely to become overweight or obese. I am a student myself and I bring my own lunch to stay away from the unhealthy foods.

If there is a will then there is a way and together we can stop unhealthy school lunches from being served.
