Matt Olstead struck out nine over five innings and set a school record for career wins as the Union baseball team beat Tahoma 8-2 to clinch a Class 4A state tournament berth.
Union will head to the Yakima Regional to face Moses Lake next Saturday.
“It was a nice bounce-back win for us,” Union coach Ben McGrew said.
The Titans lost to Gig Harbor 8-5 in the consolation semifinal, forcing Union into the loser-out game against Tahoma.
Jake Hawken went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI in the win over Tahoma. Austin Cline was 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBI.
Cody Hawken was 2 for 4 with a triple and RBI against Gig Harbor, which scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to win.
Battle Ground loses twice — Hayden Humphrey went 3 for 6 with a double on the day as the Tigers dropped two games at the 4A bi-district tournament on Saturday.
Battle Ground had already clinched a state berth, and the Tigers will advance to the Bellevue Regional next Saturday to meet Gonzaga Prep of Spokane.
Humphrey was 2 for 3 with a double and Michael Spellacy was 2 for 3 with a double and a run as Battle Ground fell to South Kitsap 6-1 in the semifinals.
Kaiden Ming-Grotte was 2 for 3 as Battle Ground lost to Todd Beamer 10-1 in the third-place game.
Mountain View eliminated — Mountain View’s drive to make the state tournament fell just short on Saturday.
On Dakody Clemmer’s two-hit shutout, the Thunder rolled past Auburn Mountainview 10-0 in the consolation semifinal of the 3A bi-district tournament.
But Mountain View fell 3-2 to North Thurston in the game for bi-district’s final state berth.
Alex Torson threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after North Thurston took 3-1 lead in the second inning. But Mountain View left the bases loaded in the both the fifth and sixth innings with a chance to tie or take the lead.
Josh Sablan went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Mountain View in the loss.
In the first game, Clemmer struck out seven in the five-inning shutout. Preston Jones was 2 for 2 with a double, triple, two runs and three RBI. Jake Ryan was 3 for 4 with two runs.
Columbia River takes No. 2 seed — Columbia River took the No. 2 seed in the bi-district tournament by beating Shelton 10-2 in the semifinals before falling to Timberline of Lacey 3-1 in the championship game.
Columbia River will advance to the Bellevue Regional to face Mountlake Terrace next Saturday in the 3A state tournament.
