Letter: Frame of reference reduces loss

The Columbian
Published: November 7, 2014, 12:00am

This is in response to the recent articles about the proposal to lower the salary of the third county commissioner and how that would also impact the salary of a few of our elected county officials. It’s not that I’m unsympathetic to the fact that a few people’s salaries would be lowered, it’s just that I feel like perhaps they are so focused on the “lower salary” aspect that they haven’t really paid attention to exactly what amount they are looking at.

In reality, what is being whined about is a loss of $3,800 a year, which translates to approximately $316 a month. While for many people in Clark County this is a huge amount, I find it hard to believe that with a monthly pre-tax salary of approximately $8,092, our county officials are really going to miss $316. And if you do, perhaps it’s time to rethink your priorities. Remember, most of your constituents make do on much less than you make, and it is offensive to hear you whining about what is, in many families, their entire monthly grocery budget.
