An informal open house is set for Monday to recognize Ed Barnes for service as an appointed member of the Clark County commissioners. The public gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

Republican Commissioners Tom Mielke and David Madore appointed Democrat Barnes to fill the unexpired term of Steve Stuart, who resigned to become Ridgefield city manager in April. The appointment began June 10 and ends Nov. 25, when county officials certify results of the Nov. 4 election.

Barnes retired as business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 48 after holding union positions since the 1960s, and serving on numerous boards and commissions. From 1995 to 2007, Barnes served on the state Transportation Commission. He also served on boards for Ronald McDonald House and Open House Ministries housing project. For years, he was active in family and children’s organizations including 4-H and Little League. Barnes is a Korean War veteran who graduated from Vancouver High School and studied at Wharton School of Business, University of Oregon and Marylhurst College.
