Search and rescue volunteers located three Vancouver hikers Tuesday night who had encountered a washed out trail on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge.

Angela Mendoza, 24, Juan Mendoza, 25, and Martha Rodriguez, 43, headed out Tuesday for a day hike from the Horsetail Falls Trailhead, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The group ran into a portion of the trail that had washed out. They weren’t sure of the best route back to the trailhead, and it was getting dark, the sheriff’s office reported.

They called 911 at about 6:30 p.m., and deputies were able to track the general location of their cellphone. Search and rescue volunteers were deployed, and at 10:30 p.m. they found the hikers, who were cold but in good spirits, according to the sheriff’s office.

The group hadn’t planned to be out after dark, but had dressed for cold weather and had some emergency supplies with them.
