YAKIMA — It’s unclear why a man took two strangers hostage before killing himself in a police standoff at a home Thursday night in the West Valley area of Yakima.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Russell told the Yakima Herald-Republic the victims have not been able to shed any light beyond saying it was dangerous and irrational.

Yakima police identified the man as 36-year-old Travis Sregzinski.

Police say he broke into a home and forced a man to drive him away. When they stopped, the victim was able to escape.

The armed man broke into another house and held a gun to the head of a young woman. Her father returned home, saw what was happening and called police.

During a standoff, officers threw flash bang grenades and entered the house to rescue the woman.

They re-entered about 11 p.m. and found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
