Days before “The Walking Dead” kicks off its fifth season Sunday, AMC has renewed the hit zombie apocalyspe drama for a sixth season.

“The Walking Dead” is the top-rated series among adults ages 18 to 49 and the highest-rated series in cable TV history.

AMC President Charlie Collier on Tuesday praised the creative team behind the show, including executive producer Scott M. Gimple and Robert Kirkman, executive producer and creator of the comic book that is the inspiration for the series.

“There’s plenty more ‘Dead’ ahead thanks to their impressive efforts,” said Collier.

The network also recently announced a pilot for a potential companion series based on a new story and new characters from Kirkman.
