Letter: Read text of charter for yourself

The Columbian
Published: October 25, 2014, 12:00am

Like many of us in Clark County I’ve been inundated by robocalls and surveys urging me to vote one way or the other on the charter question. Many of these include statements or questions designed to elicit strong support for or against the proposed new charter. Unfortunately, many of these statements or the phrasing of the questions are not borne out by the text of the proposed charter. Some seem hardly related at all.

Please read the charter proposal before deciding how you’ll cast your vote. In addition to being published in The Columbian, the entire text of the proposal is in your Voters’ Pamphlet (pages 80-96). There’s even a handy index on page 81 so you can go directly to specific issues which may be of particular concern for you.

Changing the form of our county government is a serious undertaking. It is the responsibility of each voter to consider this proposal seriously, and think about how it would serve the diverse and rapidly growing population of Clark County now and in the future.

Don’t take anybody else’s opinion. Read the document and make an informed decision. It’s our sacred responsibility as citizens of a democratic society.
