SKYKOMISH — A family of six beavers was recently located from the Duvall area to a stream near Skykomish.

Wildlife biologists had built a lodge of cut branches and sticks to protect the beavers from coyotes and other predators while they settled in.

The Daily Herald reports the move was a Tulalip Tribes project with cooperation from the state Fish and Wildlife Department and Northwest Inland Fisheries Commission.

Officials say beavers play an important role in maintaining stream health, with their dams controlling sediment and keeping water cool for fish.

The goal is to populate eight mountain streams this year with beavers captured in the lowlands where they would likely be killed.
