PACKWOOD — A small fire is burning in a remote and inaccessible section of the Goat Rocks Wilderness in the northern Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Cause of the fire is undetermined, however the area did get numerous lightning strikes in mid-August. The fire first was reported on Sunday and is estimate to be 6 acres.

“There is no known threat to the public,” said Gar Abbas, Cowlitz Valley district ranger.

Firefighting personnel are scouting the area for appropriate locations to safely construct containment or contingency lines if needed. They also are making daily observations of the area.

Smoke may be visible from U.S. Highway 12 and the occasionally the Packwood area.

There are no fire-related road or trail closures.

The fire is called the Goat Fire.

“Public and firefighter safety are our top priorities and drive how we act to suppress this fire,” Abbas said.
