PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a man and a woman were hospitalized with severe burns after a boat engine exploded near Blake Island Sunday evening.

KOMO reports several people were aboard the boat when a mechanical malfunction in the engine caused it to backfire, triggering a small explosion.

Authorities were alerted just before 5 p.m. of an explosion and fire aboard a private boat. The boat was moored at a public marina in a state park on the north side of Blake Island.

Officials said the two were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The man was in critical condition with second-degree burns to about a third of his body. The woman had first- and second-degree burns on the lower part of her body.

No other injuries were reported.
