Letter: More pressing issues for Congress

The Columbian

The Sept. 17 article reported “Cantwell to NFL: Lose ‘Redskins’ or lose tax exemption.” Our dear Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., plans to introduce a bill to force the NFL to act and force the Washington, D.C., football team to drop the name Redskins to be replaced with any other acceptable name. In my opinion, this is an utterly and completely ridiculous position to take.

Currently Congress should have many more urgent issues to discuss than wasting its time on a name change. Perhaps Cantwell is not in tune with the current world problems. In that case, she should step down from her elected position and let a more capable person take on the task.

In my opinion, the name Redskins is not derogatory or racist, in fact, the name presents the Indians as a respectful and honorable race. In polls from ESPN and the Associated Press-GfK, 71 to 79 percent of Americans voted to keep the name.
