Mustafa Aljaff, 24, studies to be a barber at the Vancouver School of Beauty, and part of his training was to give Ammar Kadhem a haircut last week.

Alfaff, a refugee from Iraq who lived in Jordan for eight years, immigrated to the United States about a year ago. Although he was already a barber in Jordan, he is working on completing a certificate program at the school.

Alfaff is required to complete 1,000 hours of training and a written test to become a licensed barber in the state of Washington.

The Vancouver School of Beauty, celebrating its 50th anniversary, offers five areas of study: barbering, cosmetology, esthetician, manicuring and instructor trainee. Training time can run up to 1,600 hours, depending on the student’s area of study.
