Union High School students will compete for a $10,000 grand prize in a national debate competition in New York City on Saturday.

Students from Union and seven other high schools around the United States will debate the issue: Is mass surveillance a justified method of governmental intelligence gathering? The 14th annual International Public Policy Forum Finals is sponsored by the Bickel & Brewer Foundation and New York University.

The eight finalists emerged from a field that originally included 1,000 high school students on 243 teams representing 32 states and 21 countries.

The finalists will supplement their written advocacy with oral argumentation.

The semifinals and final debate will be broadcast live beginning at 7:15 a.m. Saturday at www.ippfdebate.com. The final debate will be judged by a panel of experts.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, online viewers can vote for the winning school at www.ippfdebate.com.

The IPPF world champion will be named Saturday during the organization’s awards ceremony, which will be broadcast live at 5 p.m. at www.ippfdebate.com.
