Christine Donabedian had hoped to finish the Boston Marathon much faster. She also would have liked to finish much drier. Mike Donabedian called it the toughest run he’s experienced in at least a decade.

But wind, rain and temperatures in the mid-40s didn’t keep the Vancouver couple from completing their mission. In their second Boston Marathon, the Donabedians were part of the Rare Diseases Marathon Team, and raised about $2,000 for the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

“It’s a good start,” Christine said.

The race also started fine, according to Christine. But around the 16-mile mark the cold started to have an impact and slowed her progress. Her time was 3 hours, 59 minutes and 44 seconds.

Mike Donabedian finished in 3 hours and 9 minutes, a time that qualifies him to return to Boston next year. To return in 2016, Christine will need to qualify. Regardless, the Donabedians plan to continue raising awareness of the challenges facing those with rare diseases.

“It was very good for us to personally meet some of these folks and learn more about what they’re going through,” Christine said.

Donations in the Donabedians name are still being accepted through www.Firstgiving.com.
