Letter: Spiders welcome in the garden

The Columbian
Published: August 18, 2015, 5:00pm

Recently, a man came to my door and said he could kill any spiders in our home and yard. “Oh my,” I said, “spiders are our garden friends.” As a master gardener, I know they are the ultimate pest controllers. Spider webs catch aphids, cutworms, mosquitoes and other pests that destroy my plants and vegetables.

Plus, poisonous spiders, such as the black widow and brown recluse, don’t even live in our area and they don’t usually live in gardens.

So don’t let someone kill your spiders. If you see a spider, please leave it alone so it can do its job.
