EVERETT — Mariner High School in south Everett is prohibiting students from wearing sports jerseys or apparel from non-Seattle area teams.

KIRO-TV reports that the principal detailed the new policy in a “welcome back” letter to the students. He says those shirts have become symbols for some gang affiliations.

One student attending freshman orientation thought the changes were sensible.

School administrators said they made the decision after consulting with an Everett law enforcement task force that said it had been seeing an increase in gang activity around the campus.

Classes begin Sept. 2.
