Letter: We know more than test scores

The Columbian
Published: August 27, 2015, 5:00pm

I was disappointed to read in the Aug. 18 story “How did our kids do? Standardized test scores are out,” that both Battle Ground and Prairie were among the high schools not meeting standards on the Average Yearly Progress tests.

Recently my grandson and his girlfriend were at the house, and I decided to test them with their permission. First question was, “Do you know what the Pythagorean theorem is?” Both said “yes.” Next question: “What is sine, and define cosine?” They both got it right. I wanted them to know that just because I am paralyzed doesn’t mean I am brain-damaged. They are Prairie High School junior and senior students. So let it be known that those of us up here in Battle Ground are not just a bunch of country bumpkins.
