Yacolt — A Washington State Department of Agriculture open house meeting has been set up for later this month to discuss the planned eradication of gypsy moths discovered last year in north Clark County.

The moth is considered destructive and is not native to Washington.

After 16 gypsy moths — plus evidence of reproduction — were found last summer near Yacolt, officials proposed a plan to eliminate whatever gypsy moth population might be present. The state plans to use aircraft to drop insecticide over a 220-acre area this spring. There are 14 homes in the forested treatment area, which also includes a section of Cedar Creek northeast of Yacolt.

A Feb. 17 open house meeting will allow residents to learn about the eradication plan and get questions answered, according to the agriculture department.

The gathering is from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at Yacolt Primary School, 406 W. Yacolt Road in Yacolt.
