Save the Date: Vietnamese, Chinese communities celebrate new years

The Vietnamese Community of Clark County will celebrate Tet, the Lunar New Year Festival, starting at 1 p.m. today. Considered the biggest Vietnamese cultural event of the year, the event features live music, traditional performances, children’s activities and Vietnamese food at Roosevelt Elementary School, 2921 Falk Road, Vancouver. Enjoy a variety of Celtic music during the Winds and Strings annual benefit concert for the Winter Hospitality Overflow Shelters. The local ensemble will perform with piper Sophie Anna McDuffey at 3 p.m. today at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 5607 N.E. Children can discover how to “Love Your Trees” during the Second Saturday event at the Water Resources Education Center. Kids can participate in activities and crafts to create things using different parts of a tree. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Vancouver Chinese Association will celebrate the year of the goat during Chinese New Year Gala, with performances, Chinese food and traditional red envelopes from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at Skyview High School, 1300 N.W. 139th St., Vancouver. Seven local brewers will showcase their beers at the third annual Brew Fest for MS while raising money for the National MS Society, Oregon Chapter. There will also be nonalcoholic brews, along with a bike donation drive for Bike Clark County. The festival runs 5 to 9 p.m. Feb. 25 at Brickhouse Bar and Grill, 109 W. 15th St., Vancouver. Journey Theater Arts Group will take the audience into the colorful world of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr.” Charlie Bucket is one of the five children to discover a golden ticket, and is invited to tour the Wonka factory and meet its mysterious candymaker. The production begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 20-21 and 27; 2 p.m. Feb. 22 and March 1 and 3 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Washburn Performing Arts Center, 1201 39th St., Washougal. Clark College Theater Department will bring “The Rocky Horror Show” to life. This musical tribute to the science fiction and horror genres includes campy fun as a mad transvestite scientist, a newly engaged couple and a muscle man meet in this cult favorite. The show runs Feb. 27 to March 14, including a midnight show on March 7, at the Decker Theatre, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver.
