Letter: Accidents can be avoided

There are way too many accidental shootings by children playing with guns— and now at the gun rally held in Olympia on Feb. 7. Accompanying the Feb. 8 story “Armed gun-rights advocates rally at state Capitol ‘Fight Tyranny — Shoot Back‘,” there is a picture of a 4-year-old child reaching for the trigger of a rifle that his father, Erik Olson, is holding. It also appears that the father is not even paying attention to his child.

First, why even bring a child to a gun rally? Second, that is no way to properly handle a firearm; had it gone off, the barrel appears to be pointing right at Olson’s head.

Each of our 25 amendments are equally important, but so long as the responsibility of gun ownership is so blatantly disregarded, I would prefer that gun owners such as Olson keep their firearms off the street.
