Letter: Legislate Internet as public utility

The Columbian
Published: February 24, 2015, 12:00am

In this day and age, Internet access is all but required for an individual to function in modern society. Many businesses expect their employees to have access to online resources at home, and public schools continue to increase reliance on student online learning resources each year. With this ever-increasing social reliance on the Internet, it is time that our Internet providers are brought into the modern era.

The Internet is no longer a luxury as it once was. Like the telephone, Internet access must be made into a public utility to reflect its new purpose in society. Since any turn toward becoming a public utility provider will hurt the Internet service providers’ massive profit margins, they will continue to oppose any legislation pointing in that direction until it is forced upon them by the American people. Until then, they will continue to increase rates while decreasing the quality of their services to squeeze every last cent possible out of their customers.
