A horse that got loose from its pasture was struck and killed by a car this evening on a rural road in Hockinson.

The horse somehow wandered onto Northeast 212th Avenue near 109th Street. Around 7 p.m., a woman driving home from the grocery store with her son in a Honda Accord crested a hill and struck the horse, said Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Barnes. She didn’t see the horse, which was wearing a dark blue horse blanket, and couldn’t stop in time, he said.

The horse ended up in the ditch on the side of the road and died of its injuries. The woman and her son were not injured, though their car was totaled and towed from the crash site.

There are no street lights in that area where the road has an unposted speed limit of 50 mph.

The woman, her son and the horse’s owner were all crying because the horse died. The owner wasn’t sure how the horse got out of its pasture, Barnes said.
