Beware the movie where the funniest material plays over the end credits.
That is the case with “Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” which returns three of the four stars of the 2010 comedy about old friends — played by John Cusack, Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson — who had drifted apart as they unhappily settled into adulthood.
To reconnect and get their mojo back, the trio headed for a ski resort they visited in the ’80s with a 20-year-old (Clark Duke) in tow. They were magically transported back to 1986 in the comedy that milked laughs out of the hair, clothing and pop personalities of the time.
The sequel opens in 2015 after Corddry’s Lou has become a rock star and billionaire founder of Lougle (rhymes with Google) and Robinson’s Nick has scored as a multiplatform recording artist thanks to the time travel. Duke’s character, Jacob, is Lou’s son, and the pair have a contentious relationship.
Cusack? Smartly MIA, as is Crispin Glover, who was a bellman at the ski resort, while Chevy Chase returns from the first for a cameo only.
