Letter: Varied restrictions confuse public

I also heard fireworks around Christmas but I thought I must be dreaming. In the city of Vancouver, discharge is only allowed on the Fourth of July.

Luckily, people setting off fireworks on New Year’s Eve this year discharged the louder ones around 6:30 p.m. and then kept shooting off quieter ones until sometime past midnight.

I don’t know what the answer is. Maybe neighborhood groups could send out informational flyers. Of course, even if flyers were sent out, not everyone would obey the law. When I talked to a neighbor about it being against the law and that she could get a fine, she said she was aware of the law, but only was going to light off a few fireworks.

The thing to do is ban the fireworks for all of Clark County. That way there would be no confusion. I don’t know if we should contact the police prior to the Fourth of July, Christmas and New Year’s Eve to let them know we live in an area of lawbreakers. I do know that calling 911 when the fireworks are going off doesn’t get a result. There are some fines given, but not enough to stop the lawbreakers. I guess they are like the people who continue to drive while talking on the cell phone or texting. They think the laws do not pertain to them.
