College Notebook: Fast start for SPU’s Decker

Seattle Pacific University junior distance runner Lynelle Decker ran a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division II indoor track and field championships Saturday, placing fifth in the women’s 800 meters at the University of Washington’s Indoor Preview meet in Seattle.

The Mountain View High School graduate clocked 2 minutes, 12.83 seconds, easily surpassing the provisional standard of 2:15.44.

There were 31 runners in the field for the race, won by U.S. distance sensation Mary Cain in 2:07.21.

Decker’s race put her in good position right from the first meet of the season to qualify for NCAA-II indoor nationals for a third time.

The slowest time to make the cut for nationals last year was 2:14:37.

Decker’s qualifying time last year was 2:13.49.

EWU honors Williams

Eastern Washington University senior Melissa Williams was selected by the school’s Athletics Department as its female student-athlete of the month for January.

The Camas High School graduate, a 6-foot-1 senior basketball forward, carries a 3.76 grade point average as a biology major.

Williams is averaging 10.7 points and 9.4 rebounds a game for the Eagles (11-5, 4-1 Big Sky Conference). She was named Most Valuable Player of the Gator Holiday Classic on Dec. 21-22 as EWU defeated Georgia Southern and tournament host Florida.

• Chico State junior Brooke Bowen recorded her second double-double of the season Saturday. The Skyview High School graduate had 11 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-56 home overtime win over Sonoma State.

• Concordia University freshman James Phillips, a Prairie High School graduate, scored a collegiate career high 17 points of 8-of-8 shooting in the Cavaliers’ 110-65 home victory Tuesday over New Hope Christian. Concordia (17-3) is ranked No. 12 in NAIA Division II.

• George Fox University senior Charity Arn led the Bruins at at the Ed Jacoby Invitational at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. The Woodland High School graduate placed fifth in the indoor pentathlon Saturday with a totl of 3,220 points in the five events.
