I agree wholeheartedly with Paul Preslers’ Jan. 20 letter, “Travel unsafe under dim street lights.” On the rare instances I drive at night, I have noticed and remarked to others how dark it is in Vancouver compared to other cities. I have had several near misses of hitting people wearing dark clothing or hoodies and, invariably, with nothing reflective or light-colored.
Unfortunately, the same holds true with bicycles and those small scooters the disabled are forced to use. They are nearly imperceptible until you are right up on them, particularly when it’s raining. The recent rash of pedestrians being injured or killed reported in The Columbian seems to bear this out. Hopefully, it’s as simple as turning up the streetlights. If not, the city council really needs to see what can be done to alleviate this problem.
