Save the Date: Raise a glass to Vancouver drinks, goods

Explore your taste buds during Drink This, from 5 to 9 p.m. today. The self-guided tour will introduce participants to new drink makers and artisans in downtown Vancouver. Maps are available at five starting points: Charlie’s Bodega, 1220 Main St.; The Grocery Cocktail and Social, 115 W. Seventh St.; Tommy O’s Pacific Rim Bistro, 801 Washington St.; Dirty Hands Brewing, 114 E. Evergreen Blvd.; Cellar 55 Tasting Room, 1812 Washington St., Vancouver. Hockinson High School presents an original student-written play that twists familiar fairy tales into a modern setting. “Bent: A Story of Shattered Life and Sibling Strife” follows siblings Hansel and Gretel, who are tempted by three blind women in the woods. If they murder their estranged father, they will inherit his company. The production runs at 2 and 7 p.m. today at Hockinson High School, 16819 N.E. 158th St., Brush Prairie. Pearson Field Education Center will welcome pilot Jessica Cox at its Open Saturday event. Born without arms, Cox holds the Guinness World Record for the first pilot to fly with her feet. She also has two black belts in taekwondo, and has learned to surf, swim and scuba. Vancouver Parks and Recreation will host three Father and Daughter (or grandfather and granddaughter) dances. At the Firstenburg Community Center, 700 N.E. 136th Ave., the Shining Star Dance will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the community room. Participants are encouraged to dress up for an evening of dancing, crafts and snacks. At the Luepke Senior Center, the Valentine’s Ball will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6 and 7. Music will provided by a DJ, and there will be face painting, photographs and refreshments. Clark Public Utilities will host its first Race for Warmth on Feb. 8. Proceeds will benefit the utility’s Operation Warm Heart program, which helps families in crisis pay their electric bills. The race features a free kids run, 10K and 5K routes, starting from Clark Public Utilities, 1200 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. The Columbia Writers Series will welcome author Jess Walter at 1 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Foster Hall Auditorium at Clark College, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. Walter’s six novels have earned acclaim, with his 2012 book “Beautiful Ruins” landing at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list, along with being named Best Novel of 2012 by NPR Fresh Air. Tickets for Magenta Theatre’s production of “Calendar Girls” are now on sale. It’s based on the true story of a group of British housewives who create a “nude” calendar to raise money for leukemia research. The cast of the production also starred in its own “nude” calendar.
