State says it plans to restore ‘free coffee’ signs

OLYMPIA — Signs alerting drivers to free coffee will return to about a dozen highway rest stops in the state.

A state transportation official, Chris Christopher, says the signs will be installed by March.

The Herald says Christopher outlined the plans during a Senate hearing last week on a bill requiring the agency to restore all “free coffee” signs that had been in place at the end of 2011.

Volunteers and non-profit groups serve free coffee at 37 highway rest stops in Washington, but drivers don’t always know when it’s available because worn or damaged signs have not been replaced.

Bill sponsor Sen. Kirk Pearson, of Monroe, says his bill may not be needed after all but he wants to see details of the plans before deciding.
