ATHOL, Idaho — Northern Idaho authorities have ordered evacuations ahead of a fast-moving wildfire.

The blaze near the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille began Sunday afternoon and has burned about a square mile. At least three structures burned and residents near the small community of Bayview were told to leave home. It wasn’t immediately known how many people were affected, but shelters were set up in the nearby towns of Spirit Lake and Athol.

Crews used helicopters to drop retardant on the flames.

The cause of the blaze wasn’t known. Smoke was visible in Coeur d’Alene, about 25 miles south.
