Letter: Critical to pass Initiative 735

The Columbian
Published: July 9, 2015, 12:00am

Of all the ills that plague our society the most pervasive and anti-democratic is the control of our elected officials by for-profit corporations in a system which requires our legislators to pass legislation on behalf of their corporate sponsors and not the people.

We have, in Washington state’s Initiative 735, an opportunity to insist that our government remain of, by, and for the people. Further, that undue influence over our legislators, judges, and executives is a temporary and loathsome result of a mutation in our electoral system caused by an errant decision of our Supreme Court, a decision which must be overruled by we the people. Initiative 735 will promote a federal constitutional amendment declaring that corporations are not people, that money is not political free speech, and reinstate our right to know from whom our elected officials receive campaign funding. The federal constitutional amendment, called for by Initiative 735, is critical to our existence as a fair and just nation.

Please sign the I-735 petition and join us for an informative video presentation at 6 p.m. July 9 at the Cascade Park Community Library, 600 Northeast 136th Ave., Vancouver.
