While the United States toasts its World Cup stars, the Portland Thorns FC can’t wait to get a few of them back.

Playing without U.S. stars Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath and Germany’s Nadine Angerer, the Thorns lost 1-0 Saturday to a Sky Blue FC team that is last in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Sam Kerr’s goal in the 52nd minute ensured that Portland’s struggles away from home continued. The loss in Piscataway, N.J., dropped the Thorns to 0-3-2 on the road.

Portland is now 3-4-4 (13 points), ahead of only Boston (11 points) and Sky Blue FC (10 points).

Portland forward Ayo Anonma nearly tied the match in the final minute, but her header from close range was tipped over the crossbar by Sky Blue goalkeeper Brittany Cameron.

The Thorns return to action July 22 at home against Seattle Reign FC.
