Letter: Inhumane conditions confine hens

Earlier this year, I went whale-watching. It was incredible to see those majestic creatures free in the Pacific Ocean. I love Washington for several reasons — one of them our laws to protect wild animals. I get so upset to see animals in confinement who desperately want to be free.

I was therefore devastated to discover that the grocery store brand I frequent confines its egg-laying hens to tiny cages. Footage of the farm was released online. The hens were confined in a tiny space, with no room to move. Many had died inside the cages. Some individuals had their heads stuck in the rusted wire of the cage. I have seen hoarding situations on the news that looked more pleasant than this.

I will not be returning to any store that continues selling eggs from birds confined to cages.
