TACOMA — A retired Marine Corps service dog that went missing from Tacoma on Memorial Day was found Wednesday in Eatonville.

KING-TV reports that Ruby is a red Labrador retriever. She was 2 years old when she was assigned to Lance Corporal Matthew Walters at the K2 training facility for military service dogs.

Kristen Maurer with Mission K9 Rescue says they survived two deployments in Afghanistan, but were separated after the first tour.

After Ruby suffered a stroke and was retired from service, Walters adopted her.

Maurer says their attachment is so strong that Ruby gets anxious when Walters leaves home and will search for him.

On Memorial Day, Walters went to visit his family in Southern California. When Ruby realized he was gone, she searched for him as usual, only this time she escaped her yard.

Walters’ roommate found her and returned her to her owner.
