DENVER — Former President Bill Clinton is defending his foundation’s integrity as his wife’s presidential campaign heats up.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television at the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual Denver meeting, Clinton said the foundation’s activity shouldn’t be viewed through the prism of partisan politics. He said it was set up without knowing Hillary Rodham Clinton would run for president or become secretary of state. He also says Republicans like Mitt Romney and Rupert Murdoch have supported it.
Clinton acknowledges that some donations look suspicious in retrospect, like $500,000 that Algeria’s government gave the foundation in violation of a ban on foreign donations. Clinton says the money came two days after the Haiti earthquake and no one was worrying about how it would look with people dying in Haiti.
