ARIEL, Wash. — Registration is open until June 30 for the 17th annual Merwin Special Kids Day, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11 at Merwin Fish Hatchery.

The event gives children with disabilities a chance to reel in big trout. Prior to the event, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will plant two wheelchair-accessible rearing ponds with 3,000 trout ranging from 1 to 4 pounds.

Volunteers will serve as one-on-one fishing coaches, assisting youngsters during the day.

Rods, reels, tackle and t-shirts will be provided for the young anglers to use and keep. A free barbecue lunch will be served, followed by fish painting, a casting contest and other activities.

The event draws youth from the Vancouver School for the Blind, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Emanuel Legacy, Kaiser Kids and Shriners hospitals. Anyone with a special-needs child is invited.

To register, call 1-800-899-4421.
