PORTLAND — Portland Fire & Rescue says a woman died when fire consumed a house that had no working smoke alarms.
According to Lt. Damon Simmons, a crew was returning to the station from another fire late Tuesday when it came upon a house fire on Southeast Division Street.
The firefighters called for additional crews and started searching for trapped occupants. Firefighters carried out one woman, but she could not be revived.
A man escaped the blaze and was taken to a hospital by ambulance with a smoke-related injury not considered life-threatening.
