Letter: Too much sacrifice for too few jobs

The Columbian
Published: June 18, 2015, 12:00am

The Tesoro-Savage oil terminal would create some short-term construction jobs but will also create long-term pollution. The oil industry pollutes from the beginning to the end. Fracking trashes the air, water, and land. The transport produces oil train spills, fires and explosions. The consumption produces climate-destroying emissions and smog.

The terminals are not inevitable. Four coal terminals and four gas terminals have been stopped because of community opposition, and Gov. Jay Inslee has the authority to reject the Tesoro-Savage oil terminal. Tell Inslee the oil terminal will do more harm than good. How will he know what you think unless you tell him? Use Google to find his contact information.

Remind him that we can’t fight climate change by building the largest oil-by-rail terminal in the nation.

Remind him that the alternatives are already here. My friend has a Chevy Volt, which has a 400-mile range and has averaged 200 mpg in three years.

Remind the governor that the Vancouver City Council and 20 other cities, 14 neighborhoods, 10 tribes, and the Washington State Council of Firefighters have passed resolutions in opposition to new oil terminals. Tell him not to sacrifice Vancouver to the oil industry.
