BOSTON — Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev arrived at the U.S. Penitentiary in Florence, Colo., on Thursday, a day after he was sentenced to death. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that Tsarnaev was being held at the high-security facility. The penitentiary is in the same prison complex as the ADX, a Supermax prison, but is a different institution.
After a judge formally imposed a jury’s recommendation of the death penalty Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney William Weinreb said Tsarnaev is eventually expected to go to the death row unit at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind., where Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was put to death and more than 50 other people are awaiting execution.
