It’s been hot enough to melt a highway

MONROE — Washington highway officials say hot weather is melting sections of U.S. Highway 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar.

Maintenance crews have been putting chip seal on about 8 miles of damaged roadway as a temporary solution.

The heat and pressure from hot tires caused oil in the asphalt to move to the top and the rocks to settle at the bottom, which led to holes’ developing on the surface, state officials said.
