PORTLAND — Portland fire officials are considering burn bans that would include fireworks through the July 4 weekend.
The Oregonian reports dry, hot weather had Portland firefighters responding to 80 fires over the weekend compared to three the same time before Independence Day last year.
Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Tyler says city and state officials are meeting to discuss whether the department should implement a burn ban. The department will announce the decision Wednesday morning.
Cities and counties can’t implement a fireworks ban. State law allows the use of certain fireworks while others that explode or fly more than a foot off the ground are banned.
A burn ban in the Sandy Fire District goes into effect July 1.
