PORT ORCHARD (AP) — A Port Orchard man accused of strangling his girlfriend and later attacking a fellow inmate in the Kitsap County Jail has had the jail attack charges dropped because officials are unable to find the victim.

Prosecutors say they intend to refile those charges against David Kalac.

Kalac was accused of using a piece of cardboard to escape his cell in December and enter the cell of another inmate, Wayne Allen Carlson. Kalac pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and unlawful imprisonment in that attack.

Kalac has also pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in the death of Amber Lynn Coplin. She was found dead Nov. 4 at their apartment in Port Orchard. Gruesome photos were posted on an Internet message board. He was arrested in Oregon.

An investigator says the inmate who was attacked knew Coplin.
