LAKEWOOD — Investigators say a carpet-cleaning powder is to blame for the deaths of two pets in Lakewood.

The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that the cat and bird were found dead when a man returned to his home Saturday and discovered a strange odor.

Local responders were unable to pinpoint the source of the odor. Hazardous materials teams from Pierce County and nearby Joint Base Lewis-McChord were called in, along with support teams from Camp Murray and the state Department of Ecology.

They determined the culprit was a powdered carpet cleaner the homeowner had used. The brand was not immediately disclosed.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy said the owner would not be able to safely return to the home until the Pierce County Health Department investigates further.
