Letter: Provide tools for prevention

The Columbian
Published: March 3, 2015, 12:00am

An issue I would like people to think about is cost-effective birth control. Condoms are one of the cheaper alternatives out there. An intrauterine device, pills and other methods could cost a couple hundred dollars easily. Even if you have insurance, there are still the co-pays and deductibles.

I think that birth control and access to condoms should be free to anyone interested in getting contraception. Condoms are preventative and could help people from getting pregnant or getting sexually transmitted diseases. In the long run, I think our society is better off providing the necessary tools for people to be safe and to prevent unwanted pregnancies, rather than having babies they are not ready for and cannot care for or spreading an STD that possibly our community hospitals would have to treat. If the individual didn’t have insurance or could not afford the care, the cost and burden of care is put on the taxpayers anyway.
